Parsons sweep No. 5 Itawamba

The Snead State baseball team improved to 3-1 on the 2020 season by sweeping a Monday doubleheader from fifth-ranked Itawamba (Mississippi) Community College at Plunkett Field.

The Parsons capitalized on a four-run fourth inning and a six-run fifth inning to win the opener 11-4.

Snead State collected 11 hits, including two doubles by John Heacock and one each by Caleb Clark and Ryan Godfrey.

Austin Young topped the Parsons' 11-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Heacock batted 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs, and Clark closed 2-for-4 with a run.

Godfrey finished 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI, and Evan Veal went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Nate Sanderson was 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, and Cooper Self contributed a 1-for-4 effort.

Tyler Davis and Clay Stearns both scored a run for the Parsons.

Griffin Johnson earned the win on the mound. He threw three scoreless innings in relief, giving up two hits and one walk.

Cooper Wood started and pitched three innings. He allowed two hits, two runs and three walks.

Daniel James surrendered two hits, two runs and two walks in an inning of relief.

In game two, the Parsons spotted Itawamba a 4-0 lead before they rallied for a 7-4 triumph.

Snead scored single runs in the second and third innings. The Parsons used a three-run fourth to pull in front 5-4.

Veal paced the Parsons' attack by going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two runs and three RBIs. Self batted 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Canaan Garrett went 1-for-1 with an RBI, and Godfrey was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Young and Davis both closed 1-for-3.

Noah Hathorn, Heacock and Sanderson all scored a run, and Julian Sauger contributed an RBI.

Jack Wynn worked four innings in relief and picked up the victory. He allowed no hits, runs or walks while striking out three.

Turner Hughes started and tossed 1 1/3 innings, striking out three. Zachary Thomson allowed one hit and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
